How do you count words?

We count body text, footnotes, endnotes, headers, footers, text boxes, table cells, and equations. Comments, tracked-change deletions, and hidden text are excluded. We use our own word counter, and your bill is based on its count.

Do credits expire?

Accepted Answer

No. One-time credit packs never expire on any tier, free included. Each tier has its own download window for the edited output file (24 hours for Free, 7 days for Paper, 14 days for Manuscript and Volume, custom for the Custom plan); the credits themselves stay in your account until you spend them.

What are document slots?

Alongside words, every plan carries document slots. A slot is used each time you run a document through the editor; re-editing the same file after a revision uses another one, and free cross-reference reports never use any. Free accounts have 3 slots, and each paid pack adds its own (Paper 10, Manuscript 25, Volume 60), stacking if you buy again. The allowances are sized so individual writers never think about them; high-volume commercial editing belongs on the Custom plan.

What happens if I run out of credits mid-document?

No partial edit is ever performed. If a document needs more words than you have, you'll see the exact shortfall before processing: paid users can top up to continue, and free users can upgrade to a plan that covers the whole document.

What file formats do you accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept DOCX files up to 45 MB and 150,000 words per upload. The output is also DOCX with tracked changes, compatible with Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Credits on any plan can be spent across multiple uploads, so book-scale work on Volume or Custom is edited part by part.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. You can request a refund of the unused portion of a purchased pack within 30 days; used credits aren't refundable. If a technical problem on our side prevents editing, contact us and we'll make it right. See our Terms of Service for full details.

Question 7

How much do I get back if I refund a partly-used pack?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how much of the pack you've already used. We start from what you paid and subtract the value of the words you've edited, charged at our standard per-word rate. Whatever remains is refunded to your original payment method. Because used words are valued at the standard rate rather than any larger-pack discount you may have paid, the more you've edited the smaller the refund, and a pack that has been heavily used may have no refundable balance left. If you've barely touched a pack you'll get most of your payment back; very small balances aren't refunded. Free and promotional credits carry no cash value and aren't included.

Do you offer student discounts?

Our pricing is already designed to be student-affordable. The Manuscript plan covers a full thesis or dissertation at $0.13 per 1,000 words, and every plan works on any manuscript, academic or not.
